On-Campus Attire Distribution

Academic academic attire pick-up and purchase will be available at the Kimmel Center for University Life at 60 Washington Square South. Please be sure to bring your email order confirmation page and photo ID. Please note: The first two days (Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 11) are reserved for picking up advance orders that were placed by April 8. On-site purchases will not be available until Thursday, May 12.

  • Monday, May 16, 2022: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

In-person Purchases

Academic attire will be available for purchase at the Kimmel Center for all graduating classes between Thursday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 17 at the times listed above. Purchase options and pricing are listed by class year below.

Kimmel Center Access

Graduates who no longer have NYU building access can pick up or purchase their attire on the second floor of the Kimmel Center in the Commuter Lounge. Access to upper floors of the Kimmel Center is limited to those who are currently approved to be on campus and who have access to the NYU Daily Screener. The main academic attire distribution area is on the 4th floor of the Kimmel Center. All candidates with active NYU building access are asked to go to the 4th floor for full-service assistance.

Third Party Pick-up

If a graduate cannot pick up their academic attire in person, they may authorize a third party to pick up their items at the Kimmel Center.The following documentation will need to be completed and presented at the time of pick-up:

  1. Graduate must complete the Third Party Pick-up Authorization Form and upload photos of their front and back of their NYU ID Card or Government-Issued Photo ID.
  2. The authorized third party representative must present their own NYU ID Card or Government-Issued Photo ID in order to pick up items.

Graduates can also use Third Party Pick-up to pick up Grad Alley Wristbands and Founders Day Tassels.

Class of 2020 Academic Attire

A full academic attire set consists of a gown, tassel, cap (a mortarboard for bachelor's and master's, or a tam for doctoral degrees), and a hood (only for master's and doctoral degrees). Items will be available for individual purchase.

Class of 2021 Academic Attire

A full academic attire set consists of a gown, tassel, cap (mortarboard for bachelor's and master's, or a tam for doctoral degrees), and hood (only for master's and doctoral degrees). Items will be available for individual purchase.

Class of 2022 Academic Attire

A full academic attire set consists of a gown, tassel, cap (mortarboard for bachelor's and master's, or a tam for doctoral degrees), and hood (only for master's and doctoral degrees).

NYU's keepsake academic attire is purchased, not rented, by graduates. Gowns and hoods are made of sustainable fabric, woven from 100% recycled materials. Each gown saves 29 post-consumer waste plastic bottles from the landfill. Academic attire is required for all candidates and graduates attending Commencement.

Custom-made academic attire and class rings are also available for purchase.

Custom-made Academic Attire

Master's and doctoral candidates or graduates may prefer to purchase custom-made academic attire. In particular, those entering the profession of academia may prefer the fine quality regalia suitable for wearing regularly in academic ceremonies. Master's and doctoral candidates or graduates who wish to purchase custom-made academic attire can do so at the Herff Jones website.

Class Rings

Class rings can be ordered online or at the NYU Bookstore. A display of select rings are available to view in-person at the NYU Bookstore located at 726 Broadway, New York, New York, 10003.

University Honors Scholars (Class of 2022)

If you reach graduation as a top-ranking Baccalaureate candidate or graduate in the Class of 2022, you will be named a University Honors Scholar and awarded the NYU Founders Day Award. Recipients were notified by email on April 21, Founders Day.

Recipients of this honor receive a gold tassel to wear during Commencement and a personalized certificate. You can collect your gold tassel during on-campus distribution at the Kimmel Center on the 4th Floor. The certificate will be mailed in mid-summer to your permanent address listed in NYU Albert.

Please note that the University does not distribute tassels, cords, or stoles for Latin honors. Some schools might distribute cords for certain internal honors. Please reach out to your school with questions about departmental honors.
